Tooth Extraction Process

Initial Exam: We start with a gentle exam and digital X-rays to evaluate the tooth and surrounding area. This helps us determine if an extraction is necessary.

Treatment Plan and Sedation Options: We’ll review your options, answer questions, and discuss anesthesia or sedation based on your comfort level and the complexity of the extraction.

Numbing the Area: A local anesthetic is used to completely numb the area around the tooth. If needed, we can also offer nitrous oxide to help you relax.

Loosening the Tooth: Using special dental tools, we gently loosen the tooth from the socket. You’ll feel pressure, but not pain.

Removing the Tooth: Once the tooth is loose, it is carefully removed. If necessary, we may place stitches to help the area heal.

What Are the Next Steps?

Bite Down on Gauze: You’ll be asked to bite on gauze to stop the bleeding and help a clot form. This is key for proper healing.

Aftercare Instructions: We provide clear, step-by-step instructions for home care, including what to eat, how to clean the area, and what to avoid.

Healing and Follow-Up: Most patients heal within a few days. If needed, we’ll schedule a follow-up visit to check your progress or discuss tooth replacement options.

FAQ

  • When is a tooth extraction necessary?

A tooth may need to be removed due to severe decay, infection, damage, or crowding.

  • What is recovery like after a tooth extraction?

Recovery is usually smooth and takes about 3 to 7 days for a simple extraction. Right after the procedure, you’ll bite on gauze for about 30–60 minutes to help form a blood clot, which is essential for healing. Some mild swelling, tenderness, or bleeding is normal during the first 24 hours.

To promote a fast, healthy recovery:

    • Rest for the first day and avoid strenuous activity.

    • Use over-the-counter pain relievers as recommended.

    • Applying ice packs to your cheek (20 minutes on/off) can reduce swelling.

    • Stick to soft foods like smoothies, soup, yogurt, or mashed potatoes.

    • Don’t brush near the area the first day. After 24 hours, gently rinse with warm salt water.

Most patients feel much better within a few days and are back to normal activities quickly. If pain worsens or bleeding persists, contact us right away.

  • What is dry socket, and how do I prevent it?

Dry socket happens when the clot comes out early, exposing the bone. It can be painful. Avoid straws, smoking, and heavy rinsing to reduce your risk.
